Idea Development • Question 3 • Teaspoon

Practical assignment (problem solving)

SCAMPER

Substitute something
Combine it with something else
Adapt something to it
Modify or Magnify it
Put to other uses
Eliminate something
Reverse or Rearrange it

BRIEF

You are given a teaspoon as an object. Now apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques to it and give a brief explanation of what new product comes of this and how it can be marketed.

Defining a teaspoon

What is the function of a teaspoon

The main functions of a teaspoon is to stir the contents of a mug, or measure out a specific amount of something, like sugar or baking powder. It can also be used for eating, most commonly for desserts. Unconventional uses include using it for placing soil around small potted plants, making art projects and simply for keeping as collectibles.

Shape, size and materials

A regular teaspoon has a stick-like handle with a small bowl at the end. This end can, on a standardized teaspoon, hold 5ml (Where a tablespoon can hold 15ml). Accurate measurements are useful for baking and other instances when quantity is important.

The size, however, can vary from spoon to spoon. Older spoons tend to have a smaller size than spoons made today. The shape of the handle and bowl also varies from clean, straight lines to the most ornate finish. Materials vary from plastic to bamboo, stainless steel and silver.
Measuring spoons are created to make it easy to get the exact same amount every time (as long as you level of the top). And some spoons are created with only the stirring function in mind.

Redesigning a Teaspoon

Substitute

Substitute the material for durable paper or cardboard.

Combine

Combine it with single serve yoghurt or ice cream packaging.

Adapt

Make a tablespoon, fork and knife version for larger ready made meals. (Fjordland or Toro equivalents)

Modify

Make it part of the lid or wrapping.

Magnify

Highlight the spoon on the packaging. Advertise the inclusion of the new included cutlery.

Put to other uses

Add to other products, like easy made hot chocolate, coffee and loose leaf tea.

Eliminate

Eliminate the need for bringing your own or buying extra plastic cutlery when on the go.

Reverse

Place the spoon on the inside of the lid, or under a flap, to keep it clean and hygienic.

Rearrange

Change habits and offer something helpful.

My idea

The amount of times I’ve forgotten to bring a spoon for yoghurt day and had to MacGyver the plastic film into a utensil, or the times I’ve gotten a quick ready meal for a study session, just to realize I don’t have any way to eat the food, inspired me to think of this idea.

These are Tine’s new containers which they’re currently testing with sour cream. My idea uses these by implementing a spoon in the lid. I’ve gone for a yogurt design, but it could apply to desserts or porridge or even baby food.

Idea Development • Question 3 • Rice Packaging

Practical assignment (problem solving)

SCAMPER

Substitute something
Combine it with something else
Adapt something to it
Modify or Magnify it
Put to other uses
Eliminate something
Reverse or Rearrange it

BRIEF

You have to design packaging for rice. The packaging has to be different from what is out there in the market. Apply each one of the SCAMPER techniques and do a write‑up on your findings. Then choose the option that you think would work best and do a sketch of what the packaging would look like.

Redesigning Rice Packaging

Substitute

Substitute conventional boxes and plastic bags with a new alternative.

Combine

Add a separate lid for making it easy to keep the box closed.

Adapt

Make the lid function as a measuring cup.

Modify

Modify the shape to fit comfortably in the hand.

Magnify

Add more packaging sizes. The large size does not include the measuring cup, but has a wide opening, which makes it easy to scoop out the desired amount. And the small size contains enough rice for one portion.

Put to other uses

Use the same design for other grains and pasta

Eliminate

Eliminate food waste by measuring out the perfect amount of rice each time.

Reverse

Make it out of sturdy material, so the box can be used for storage when empty.

Rearrange

Make a version out of metal, which would be targeted for selling at delicacy shops, such as Selfridges&co or Marks & Spencer.

My idea

I used the iPhone’s scan function to snap a picture of my sketches. But I failed to archive it properly on the first try. So here’s my sketch including the ink bleeding from the rear side.

Finished version

I’ve taken the liberty to edit out the excess background paper in Photoshop.

Final version – Snapped with the camera on iPhone. And slightly wonky perspective.
Final version – Scanned with the scan function in Notepad on iPhone.

Idea Development • Question 2

Research and written assignment

SCAMPER

Substitute something
Combine it with something else
Adapt something to it
Modify or Magnify it
Put to other uses
Eliminate something
Reverse or Rearrange it

BRIEF

Use the Internet to research the history of the fast food chain McDonald’s and explain which parts of the SCAMPER model are evident in its development onto its current success.

Applying the SCAMPER model to McDonalds

Substitute

McDonalds success plays upon them not offering traditional plates, cups and cutlery. Instead, all their products comes in paper, cardboard or plastic wrappings. This removes the need for washing these things. The only difference between take-away and in-house eating, is how the food is delivered. All the individual components are separately wrapped, and can either be placed on trays or in a paper bag

Combine

To appeal to children, they added Happy Meal as a kid-friendly option. This is a child sized serving of food and a small toy. The toy is usually related to a trending movie, game or popular toy, such as Spongebob, Super Mario, Lego, Barbie or Furby.

Adapt

In the beginning, customers had to ask to get extra ketchup. Then McDonalds started pre-filling small cups with ketchup, which they sold on request. Today, customers can help themselves, and have the option to fill some small, paper cups with ketchup from a spout, for no extra cost.

Modify or Magnify

They are changing the way the customers can order. They’ve introduced machines where the customers can input their order and pay. This removes errors in communication between customer and employee, and opens up time for the employee to do other tasks. They’ve also cooperating with delivery options such as UberEats in the US, and Foodora in Norway, giving the customer the option to have the food delivered to where they are.

Put to other uses

With the McCafé brand, they’ve expanded their field and can now offer more dessert and coffee options. They’ve also opened separate locations where they only offer the McCafé selections.

Eliminate

In the recent years, McDonalds has started to eliminate single use plastic, and have switched to paper straws and removed the plastic lid from their McFlurry product. They’re not perfect yet, but it’s a good start.

Reverse or Rearrange

They rearrange and modernize both the interior and the exterior of their locations. Many of them also features play areas for children.

Idea Development • Question 1

Practical assignment (puzzles and fun)

Riddle #1

A man is replacing a wheel on his car, when he accidentally drops the four nuts used to hold the wheel on the car. They fall into a deep drain, irretrievably lost. A passing girl offers him a solution that enables him to drive home. What is it?

My solution

This one is tricky, and can have multiple solutions. The obvious one is to take one nut from each of the other wheels, and use them to fasten the replacement wheel. But this can only be a temporary solution.

We don’t know where this man is, if he’s on the side of a road or at a car mechanic shop. If he’s at a mechanic shop, he might have spare parts and could use those.

There might be a second vehicle which he could use, either another car, a motorbike or a bicycle. Then he can return later with a new set of nuts.

Perhaps the man is on his way to go fishing, and has fishing equipment in his car, then the girl could suggest fastening a magnet to the rod, and try to fish the nuts back up from the drain.

Or perhaps the car is a toy car in need of repair, and the girl is a shop assistant who suggests fastening the wheel with some glue or other adhesive.

Riddle #2

Two Russians walk down a street in Moscow. One Russian is the father of the other Russian’s son. How are they related?

My solution

They are married. Husband and Wife. They have a son together.

Riddle #3

What occurs once in June, once in July and twice in August?

My solution

This one is easy. The letter u appears once in June and July, and twice in August.

Riddle #4

Six drinking glasses stand in a row, with the first three full of water and the next three empty. By handling and moving only one glass at a time, how can you arrange the six glasses so that no full glass stands next to another full glass, and no empty glass stands next to another empty glass? What is the minimum number of moves to solve this puzzle?

My solution

You only need to touch one glass. Lift the second glass in the row, and pour the content into the fifth glass.
